Lovecraft looking for a sense of the cosmic in fiction, and the greatest weird fiction writers: Algernon Blackwood ("The Willows"), Arthur Machen ("The White People"), Edgar Allan Poe ("The Fall of the House of Usher"), M. P. Shiel ("The House of Sounds" and "The Purple Cloud"), etc.; on style and realism (and A. Merritt's Moon Pool as an example), on Lovecraft's temperament (with a reference to an engraving by Dürer).
